Choosing the correct headset may seem like a confusing task, and people often get it wrong first time round.
This blog give you a run-down on the fundamentals that you should know when choosing a headset.

What's in a Headset?

  • The top cap and star nut – to create compression on to the headset bearings, keeping it all in place
  • The Upper cup – a cover, seal, compression ring, bearing and (in most cases) a cup
  • The Lower cup – a cup, bearing and crown race

All of the Gusset S2 Mix n Match headsets feature machined cups, and a high quality sealed cartridge bearing. We sell these as uppers and lowers so that you can combine the correct two to fit your frame, as there is now a multitude of combinations due to the advent of tapered headtubes.

Headset Type

There are different types of threadless headsets;

  1. Integrated (IS)
  2. Zero Stack (ZS)
  3. External Cup (EC)

Each type has its own specific requirements for fitment, so it’s important to know which type your bicycle frame uses.

You should refer to your frame’s specifications to determine this.

If you have an External Cup, it will be more obvious than being able to tell the difference between Integrated and Zero Stack types.

Headset Size

Headsets come in various sizes, measured in millimetres (mm).

The two primary measurements to consider are the head tube inner diameter and the steerer tube outer diameter.

These measurements will determine the headset size you need.

If you don’t have a vernier calliper, we would recommend referring to your frame’s and fork’s specification.

Terminology Decoded

Once you have determined the fitment type and measurements, understanding the terminology is a piece of cake.

For example:-

The Gusset S2 Mix n Match EC34/30 Upper

  • EC – External Cup
  • 34 – 34mm press fit into the frame
  • 30 – 30mm bearing
